This method doesn’t have 100% accuracy (if Scrivener doesn’t find your projects, that doesn’t mean with 100% certainty that they aren’t there), but it’s a good and easy place to start. ![]() If you are now aghast and panicky and need to know where your Scrivener projects are right now, as you should be if you don’t already know, I’ve got you covered.įrom within Scrivener-Scrivener has some file management tools built into its system. This is the file you yourself created when you started the project, and it’s the file you are actively opening and working in, as opposed to automatic backups, which we’ll talk about a little further down in the post. When you create a project in Scrivener, you are creating the live file, also known as the save file. So, let’s dive in! In this post, we’ll cover Scrivener live files and backups-where to save each, how to find each, how these files are different from each other, and some basic best practices. I certainly have! But if you do your due diligence, it’s extremely rare that this would actually occur. I think every writer has had a panicky moment (or two or three) where they fear their files have been lost, erased, or damaged beyond repair. Please don’t post on social media, a forum, write a negative review, or write into Scrivener support saying how devastated you are that your life’s work is gone when you didn’t know where your files are saved-blaming the program doesn’t get your work back and won’t prevent this from happening in the future (no matter what program you use to write or do anything else in) if you don’t have good file management systems in place. ![]() But with the desktop version of Scrivener…it’s a big nope.įriends, allow me a moment of tough love: if you are working on something you actually care about, you have to know where it’s saved at the very least. And if you don’t have the Scrivener iOS app syncing with Dropbox or aren’t manually backing up your files, that is the case there (I can go into the iOS version more in another post). Because with mobile apps, often you will lose your local data if you delete the app. In a world where people are increasingly working on phones and other mobile devices, the confusion isn’t too surprising. Yet many people believe that their work resides within the software or a cloud server connected to an account which leads to a lot of confusion about upgrades, syncing projects between devices, backups, and more. You set the save location when you create a new project, even. That’s because Scrivener is file-based software, much like the traditional Microsoft Word (Office 365 is, of course, cloud-based). The answer to all of these questions is NO. Maybe you’ve had one of these questions: if I upgrade to Scrivener 3, will I lose my work? If I have to delete and re-download Scrivener, will all of my projects be gone? I’m being asked to re-enter my license-does that mean all of my work has been erased? My Recent Projects list is empty-is my manuscript gone forever?! I am amazed by how many people are writing novels, short stories, PhD theses, extensive research papers, and memoirs and make this critical mistake: not knowing where their files are saved. ![]() I always recommend shopping secondhand/locally first when possible, but if you are purchasing online, I appreciate you using my link.
